Overview

During this presentation, I'll show several Linux music applications.

Applications

Drum Machines

Drum machines let you create rhythmic patterns.

Software Synthesizers

Software synthesizers are applications that create sounds. Software synthesizers are sometimes called softsynths.

Audio Editors

Audio editors are applications that let you record, play, and change audio data.

Music Notation Applications

Music notation applications print your music in a readable format. Common formats are sheet music, lead sheets, and tablature.

MIDI Sequencers

MIDI sequencers play and record musical scores using the MIDI protocol. MIDI, Musical Instrument Digital Interface, is a protocol that allows musical equipment like computers, drum machines, synthesizers, etc. to talk to each other.

Module Trackers

Module trackers are applications that let you play and edit module files. Module files are files that contain both sounds and scores.

Packages

Packages are files that allow one to easily install applications and their supporting files. Here are collections of music software packages for common desktop Linux distributions.
