We are a motley crew of computer enthusiasts, professionals, and software hackers who share a passion for learning about and passing on our knowledge of Linux and Open Source Software. Our members inhabit the full spectrum of skill in this technology, from beginner to guru. Our doors are always open to any and all who are curious and want to discover how to make computing fun again.

Membership is completely free and open to all. You are not required to be a student at the Illinois Institute of Technology, and we are very receptive to anyone from adjacent communities in Chicago.

History

Our first meetings took place in 2002. They were a very simple affair, consisting of several friends congregating around drinks to laugh at the state of the world, and to talk about hacking. A common bond we shared was a fundamental understanding and respect for the tenets of Free and Open Source Software (or F/OSS). We all used GNU/Linux.

As meetings became more formalized, and the group became larger, something became readily apparent to the founding members. It was discovered that folks interested in F/OSS and GNU/Linux were often the most interesting, intellectual, creative and motivated people alive.

And now, many years later, this is still the case. There is a certain degree of questioning the status quo, a discontent with the current state of technology, a desire to make the digital world, and thereby the real world, a better place, that unites our members.

This is the continuing strength and power of the Free and Open Source community. While our group focus is now as varied as our members' interests, Linux remains the lingua franca and our common bond. We hope that you can join us.
